1.3  Purpose

XLML and XlmlGen are especially designed for the following purposes:

  • Easy creation of e-learning modules by non-technical authors. This is realised by extending the well-known XHTML with conceptional elements like page flows, sections, tables of contents, glossary, bibliography, and simplified media embedding.
  • Produce high quality documents without any broken links. This is realised via the builtin url checker.
  • Produce HTML pages which can be integrated in online e-learning platforms. This is realized with a configuration file, which allows to specify templates for every hyperlink which is generated by XlmlGen.

Experiences

XLML has already successfully be used for the e-learning project eL3, which uses two different e-learning platforms (ILIAS open source and Hyperwave eLearning Suite). Courses based on the same source documents were successfully integrated into both platforms by generating the HTML pages with different configuration files.

This documentation is also built with XLML.
